PLFA II Week 5 Roundup

The fifth weekend of action in PLFA II was not a good one for home fans, as all five host teams lost their games. The Angels came the closest to victory, losing by just two points to the Cougars, while the B teams for the Gdynia Seahawks and the Wrocław Devils both scored road victories. In other action, the Saints beat Thunders and the Broncos got their first PLFA II win. Here is a recap of each of the five games.

Szczecin Cougars 21, Toruń Angels 19 (in Toruń)

The Angels staged a big second-half rally to take the lead at home against the Cougars on Sunday, only to see Szczecin steal the victory late in fourth quarter on a short touchdown run by Marcin Łodygowski. The pivotal win moved the Cougars into a tie for first in the North Division with the Gdynia Seahawks B team.

Szczecin went ahead 15-0 in the first half, getting a safety on Toruń's first offensive play as well as two touchdown passes from Andrzej Łukasik. The Angels scored the next 19 points, however, benefitting from two second-half touchdown runs from quarterback Łukasz Kuśmirek before Łodygowski gave the Cougars the winning points.

Szczecin's next two games will come against top teams in the North. The Cougars will travel to Sopot to face the Sabercats next on June 15, before hosting the Seahawks on July 6. As for the Angels, the Seahawks will be their next opponents. The two teams will play in Gdynia on June 22.

Wrocław Devils B 26, Globinit Rzeszów Ravens 8 (in Rzeszów)

The Ravens fell for the first time in three games, failing to garner much offense in a 26-8 loss to the Devils B team on Saturday. Although the Ravens were boosted by the return of running back Paweł Cieślik, they were unable to overcome the Wrocław quarterback-receiver combination of Aleksander Karganović and Tomasz Sosza.

The Devils duo combined for a pair of touchdowns in the second half, the second a 45-yarder in the fourth quarter that put the game out of reach. Wrocław led 14-0 at halftime, on the strength of second-quarter touchdowns by Krzysztof Stopa and Ernest Rogowicz. Rzeszów got their only points in the third quarter, on a touchdown run by Bartosz Słomka.

Both teams now stand at 2-1, putting them a half-game behind the undefeated Częstochowa Saints in the South Division. The Devils and the Ravens will both be back in action on June 23, when the Devils will host the Rybnik Thunders and the Ravens will travel to Sucha Beskidzka to face the Broncos. Both teams will play the Saints later on in the season.

Gdynia Seahawks B 42, Słupsk Griffons 0 (in Słupsk)

The Seahawks B team and the Griffons played two very close games in PLFA 8 last season, but that pair of contests is now ancient history after the Seahawks destroyed the Griffons 42-0 on Saturday in Słupsk. Aleksander Kordyś threw four touchdown passes for Gdynia in the win.

The Seahawks jumped out to a 16-0 lead in the first quarter, getting touchdown runs from Mateusz Król and Szymon Blokus. They extended the advantage to 30-0 before halftime on touchdown receptions by Dawid Kryszłowicz and Kamil Lipka-Wszołczyk. Kryszyłowicz would go on to add another score in the second half.

Things got worse for the Griffons in the fourth quarter, when quarterback Kamil Iwanicki was lost to injury. Słupsk will likely be without Iwanicki for their next game, at the Bydgoszcz Raiders on June 22, and possibly for the rest of the season as well. The Seahawks, now 2-0 on the season, will also play next on June 22, hosting the Toruń Angels in their home opener.

Częstochowa Saints 36, Rybnik Thunders 12 (in Rybnik)

Jacek Wróblewski, who scored twice for the Saints in their season-opening victory, did himself one better by finding the end zone three times in Częstochowa's 36-12 win over the Thunders in Rybnik on Sunday. The victory moved the Saints into first place in the PLFA II South Division, a half-game ahead of three other teams, while the Thunders fell to 0-2 on the year.

Wrobłewski scored first for the Saints, but Mateusz Kustoś answered quickly for the Thunders with a 22-yard touchdown run. Wróblewski then scored on a 26-yard run to put Częstochowa back ahead, and then Saints never looked back. They got three more touchdowns in the second quarter to lead 33-6 at halftime.

The Saints are now 2-0 all-time against the Thunders, having beaten them 27-0 last season in the two teams' only previous meeting. Częstochowa will next face the only other unbeaten team in the South, the 1-0 Skoczów Pretorians, on June 23. The Thunders will also be back in action that same day, traveling to Wrocław to face the Devils B team.

Majster-Pol Sucha Beskidzka Broncos 31, Olkusz Silvers 20 (in Olkusz)

The Broncos denied the Silvers their first PLFA win, dropping Olkusz to 0-3 this season and 0-9 overall with a 31-20 victory on Sunday in Olkusz. The turning point of this exciting contest came in the third quarter, when the Silvers fumbled away the second-half kickoff, a mistake that was quickly capitalized on by the Broncos.

Olkusz led 8-0 after a quarter of play, but Sucha Beskidzka got touchdown runs by three different players in the second quarter to go ahead 18-8. Olkusz got back to within four before halftime, seemingly reclaiming the momentum until the third-quarter mistake. Łukasz Wala scored on a 25-yard touchdown reception shortly after the fumble and later sealed the Silvers' fate with his third touchdown of the contest, a 34-yard run in the fourth quarter. Michał Polak scored twice for Olkusz.

The Broncos moved their record to 1-1 with the victory, putting them in the middle of the South Division pack a third of the way through the season. They will be at home for their next game, which comes on June 23 against one of the teams above them in the standings, the Rzeszów Ravens. Olkusz will next face the Pretorians, with that game taking place on June 30 in Skoczów.
