PLFA II Week 2 Roundup

Eight different teams opened their 2013 seasons in PLFA II this weekend, with the Gdynia Seahawks B and Sopot Sabercats undoubtedly providing the most excitement in a close, tense affair that went Gdynia's way. The Królewscy emerged as a force to be reckoned with in the 'tram' division, while the Spartans B and Saints came away with low-scoring shutout victories. Here is a brief recap of each of the four games played over the weekend.

Gdynia Seahawks B 24, Sopot Sabercats 20 (in Sopot)

In Sopot, the Seahawks B team scored 24 straight points early, but had to hold off a late Sabercats charge to win the first edition of the Tri-Cities derby on Saturday afternoon. Sopot got three touchdown passes from Luke Zetazate, but fell to defeat thanks in part to two failed two-point conversion attempts.

The Sabercats took the lead in the first quarter on a Bartosz Romanowski touchdown reception, but Aleksander Kordyś quickly threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Mikołaj Meller to give Gdynia an 8-6 lead. After a scoreless second quarter, Kordyś hit Dawid Kryszyłowicz with a scoring pass in the third quarter, and Dawid Pawlik ran an interception back 25 yards for a score to make it 24-6.

Meller scored the conversion after each of the three Gdynia touchdowns, and that turned out to be the difference in a game in which both teams scored three touchdowns apiece. Romanowski scored again before the third quarter was out to cut the lead to ten points, and Paweł Kaczanowski hauled in a Zetazate touchdown pass in the fourth to set up a tense finish that saw the Seahawks barely hold on for the win.

Warsaw Spartans B 18, Warsaw Werewolves 0 (in Warsaw)

In a game that was nearly postponed due to a waterlogged field, the Spartans B team took care of business against a Werewolves team that came in with a record of 1-11 in two seasons of PLFA II play. The game was the season opener for both teams.

Hubert Rokita scored on a five-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter, and that was about all the offense that was to be had in the first half. Sebastian Świderski intercepted a pass at midfield and ran it back up the left sideline for a touchdown just before halftime, and Rokita scored again in the fourth quarter to close out the scoring.

Both teams will be back in action on May 18, when the Werewolves will hope their home field dries out enough to host the Pabianice Wilki, while the Spartans will visit the Warsaw Królewscy across town. Both the Wilki and the Królewscy won their opening games of the season.

Częstochowa Saints 18, Majster-Pol Sucha Beskidzka Broncos 0 (in Sucha Beskidzka)

The Saints overcame three interceptions to beat the Broncos in the opener for both teams in South Division play. Sucha Beskidzka was making its debut in PLFA II, while the Saints got off to a winning start after barely missing out on the playoffs in that league last season.

Jacek Wróblewski was the star for Częstochowa, and his six-yard touchdown run in the first quarter got the Saints off to an early lead. Kamil Cichy scored on a short touchdown run later in the quarter to make it 12-0, and Wróblewski wrapped up the scoring in the fourth quarter with a 25-yard run.

Both teams will get nearly a month to prepare for their next game. The Saints will try to make it two wins in a row to start the season when they travel to Rybnik to play the Thunders on May 26, while the Broncos will look for their first PLFA II victory on the same day when they visit the Olkusz Silvers.

Warszawa Królewscy 49, Warszawa Crusaders 0 (in Warsaw)

With five teams from Warsaw in the same division, there are bound to be some good rivalry games in the PLFA II Central this year. Unfortunately, Saturday evening's game between the Królewscy and the Crusaders, despite the bad blood shared by the two teams, was not one of them, as the Królewscy blew the game open with 30 fourth-quarter points to win 49-0.

The Królewscy led only 12-0 at halftime, on the strength of touchdown runs by Krystian Wysmoliński and Karol Żak. Things unravelled for the Crusaders in the fourth quarter, which saw them give up a safety, an interception return for a touchdown, and a 56-yard touchdown run by Konrad Wojnarowski. Żak threw two touchdown passes in the win.

Both teams will be at home for their second game of the season. The Królewscy, who won all six of their regular season games last year, will take on the Warsaw Spartans B team on May 18. The Crusaders will welcome the Olsztyn Lakers to the capital on June 2.
