The PLFA II season got underway this weekend, with 8 of the 21 teams in the league opening their seasons.
Here is a quick recap of each of the four games that took place.

Bydgoszcz Archers 22, Słupsk Griffons 7 (in Słupsk)

The Archers and Griffons, who both played in the PLFA 8 North Division in 2011 and 2012, renewed their rivalry at the PLFA II level on Sunday with a tight matchup in which Bydgoszcz eventually prevailed. The 22-7 victory was sweet revenge for the Archers, who drew and lost against the Griffons last season.

Bydgoszcz ran the ball well, rotating a trio of running backs throughout the game to keep the Griffons defense on its toes. Filip Klause scored the only points of the first half with a one-yard plunge in the first quarter. Marcin Pulc put the Archers up 14-0 with a touchdown run in the third quarter, but Kamil Iwanicki got the Griffons back to within a touchdown with a 30-yard scoring run early in the fourth. Mateusz Marciniak quickly ended any Słupsk comeback hopes, however, taking in a Paweł Kubiak pass and going 80 yards with it for the icing touchdown.

Słupsk will now have more than a month to prepare for their next game, a May 25 home contest against the Gdynia Seahawks B team. The Archers, whose victory came after two difficult pre-season defeats, will open their home campaign on May 4, when they host the Toruń Angels.

Globinit Rzeszów Ravens 20, Rybnik Thunders 6 (in Rzeszów)

The Ravens doubled their total number of official PLFA victories with a winning home opener over the Thunders, who have now lost five straight games dating back to last season. Mateusz Kuc was the biggest star for the hosts, snatching three interceptions to help keep the Thunders off the board for most of the afternoon.

Paweł Ciupak gave the Ravens all the points they would need early on, scoring on an explosive 70-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Dawid Rożek's fumble return for a touchdown made the score 14-0 at halftime, and Rzeszów extended their lead to 20-0 in the third quarter before Rybnik finally got on the board behind a 30-yard touchdown run by Jan Trojniak.

The Ravens will try to make it two in a row to open the season when they travel to Olkusz on May 4 to play the Silvers, the only team they beat last season. The Thunders will have to wait a bit longer to face their next opponent, the Częstochowa Saints, who will visit Rybnik on May 26.

Pabianice Wilki 20, Olsztyn Lakers 0 (in Pabianice)

The Wilki, playing on home soil, made their PLFA II debut a winning one, shutting out the Lakers 20-0. Pabianice looked to be in trouble early on, when their best running back, Kamil Kaczmarek, left the game with an injury in the first quarter. However, his replacement, Szymon Siotor, filled in admirably, scoring twice in the game.

Siotor scored on a 4-yard run in the first quarter, for what turned out to be the only points of a very defensive first half. Siotor found the end zone again in the third quarter, this time barreling in from 38-yards out. Michał Pryczek picked off a pass took it back to the end zone late in the game to ice it for the victors.

Both teams will be in the capital for their next contests. Pabianice will play the Warsaw Werewolves on May 18, while Olsztyn will take on the BEagles the next day. The Lakers, playing in their third season in the PLFA, are still looking for their first league victory, after going 0-4 in PLFA 8 play in 2011 and 0-6 last year in PLFA II.

Wrocław Devils B 42, Olkusz Silvers 0 (in Wrocław)

The Devils B team picked up right where they left off last season, taking apart the Silvers completely in a game that nearly mirrored Wrocław's 45-0 victory over Olkusz last season. The Devils got all of their scoring in just two of the four quarters, getting 26 points in the second quarter and 16 more in the third.

Aleksander Karganović, a young quarterback who was called up from reserve duty to play for the senior Devils team last season, threw touchdown passes to Hubert Głoś and Tomasz Soska to begin the scoring, and Filip Kresowaty ran for two scores in the third quarter. Sebastian Świątek added a defensive touchdown for the Devils.

Olkusz, who gave up the most points of any PLFA II team last season, has yet to win a PLFA game in seven attempts. They will get their next chance on May 4, when they host the Globinit Rzeszów Ravens. The Devils will hit the road the next day to face the Skoczów Pretorians.
