Rebels close in on playoff berth

Autor: Alex Zarganis Published: 12 Jun 2012 | Comments: 0

The AZS Silesia Rebels pounded the Dom-Bud Krakow Tigers on Sunday afternoon, taking over sole possession of the final playoff spot with a 65-0 victory in Krakow. The Tigers were eliminated from playoff contention with the loss, while the Rebels are now one game clear of Kozły Poznań with only one week remaining in the season.

Arkadiusz Kanicki, Łukasz Rębowski and Zbigniew Szrejber each had multiple touchdowns for the Rebels, who exploded for 33 points in the second quarter to put the game away. Kanicki scored on both sides of the ball in that second quarter, before completing a hat trick in the third with a 60-yard touchdown scamper. That final touchdown came just after a 25-minute delay thanks to a thunderstorm. Michał Kołek threw for three touchdowns, two of those going to Szrejber in the fourth quarter.

Either a Rebels win or a Kozły Poznań loss in the final weekend of the season would clinch the fourth position in the standings and the playoff spot that goes with it. If the two teams are tied after the last round of games, Kozły would take the tiebreaker thanks to a 35-33 scoring advantage in two head-to-head games this season.

The Rebels, who were well-supported on the road in Krakow, will look to ride the momentum they have built during a modest two-game winning streak when they travel to Warsaw to meet the Eagles on July 17. The Tigers, on the other hand, will be in Wrocław on the same day to take on the 6-3 Devils, who have already been locked into the number three playoff seed.

Saturday, June 16, 2:00 PM (in Kiekrz): Kozły Poznań (2-7) vs. Gdynia Seahawks (8-1)
Sunday, June 17, 2:00 PM: Warsaw Eagles (7-2) vs. AZS Silesia Rebels (3-6)
Sunday, June 17, 2:30 PM: Wrocław Devils (6-3) vs. Dom-Bud Krakow Tigers (1-8)
