Steelers get first win

The Zagłębie Steelers Interpromex finally got their first 2015 victory on Saturday, leapfrogging Kozły Poznań at the bottom of the standings with a 13-12 win in Będzin. The loss put Kozły at 1-6 for the season and, with all three of their remaining games coming against teams currently in the top half of the standings, Poznań would appear to be in grave danger of a last-place Topliga finish.

The Steelers had to come back in the fourth quarter to secure the victory, their first since a win over the Warsaw Sharks last May. It was also the first time Zagłębie has emerged victorious against Poznań, with Kozły taking all five of the previous meetings between the two teams.

The Poznań defense did their best to keep their offense in the game, recording three interceptions on the afternoon. Zagłębie quarterback Michał Krzelowski, the victim of those picks, nonetheless got the scoring underway with a 13-yard touchdown pass to Konrad Starczewski in the second quarter. Kozły responded with a 40-yard touchdown reception by Emilio Dangote that tied the game at 6-6.

Jeremy Dixon threw his second touchdown pass of the game, a 20-yarder to Artur Wrzosek, to put Kozły ahead 12-6 in the third quarter. Poznań was unable to convert after each of their touchdowns, however, a fact that would become vital when Starczewski scored again in the fourth quarter. Dominik Sikora's PAT after that 2-yard run would be the difference in the game.

If there is a silver lining to Poznań upcoming schedule, it is that two of their three remaining games will come at home. Kozły will next welcome the Gdynia Seahawks to town on May 24. The Steelers will also play their next two games at home, beginning with a matchup against Husaria Szczecin on May 23.

Steelers (1-5): vs. Husaria Szczecin (3-4), Saturday, May 23, Time TBA
Kozły (1-6): vs. Gdynia Seahawks (6-1), Sunday, May 24, 3:00 PM
