Sharks get first Topliga win

Autor: Alex Zarganis Published: 21 Apr 2015 | Comments: 0

13 proved to be a very lucky number for the Warsaw Sharks on Sunday, as they finally broke a 12-game Topliga losing streak with an 18-13 triumph over Kozły Poznań on Sunday afternoon in Poznań. The Sharks, who came within five points of Kozły in their second meeting last season, came from behind to win in the fourth quarter.

Emilio Dangote put Kozły up briefly in the second quarter with a short touchdown run, but that effort was quickly matched by Antonio Roane. Neither team was able to convert after their score, and the first half ended tied at 6. Roane's score came on a drive that started at the Kozły 10-yard line after a failed punt attempt.

Karol Żak's 7-yard touchdown pass to Mateusz Bednarczuk in the third quarter gave the Sharks their first lead of the ballgame. The fourth quarter looked a lot like the second, as it began with a 1-yard Dangote touchdown run that was quickly answered by Roane's second score of the game. The Sharks held off Kozły the rest of the way to finally find the winner's circle.

Kozły, now 1-3, will host the other team from the capital, the Warsaw Eagles, on April 26. That will be the first of back-to-back games against a team Poznań has never beaten in 11 tries. The Sharks will also be back on the field on April 26, looking to make it two consecutive wins in a home matchup with 1-3 Husaria Szczecin.
