Seahawks squeak by Lowlanders

The Primacol Białystok Lowlanders continue to impress in their return to the Topliga, but they still weren't quite good enough pull off a monumental upset of a 'Big Three' team on Saturday, falling just short in a 35-32 defeat at the hands of the Gdynia Seahawks. The Seahawks had to hold off a late surge by the Lowlanders to maintain their position in second place in the standings.

The last time these two teams met came back in 2011, when the Seahawks obliterated a much different Lowlanders squad 68-0. This time, Gdynia had trouble stopping the Białystok combo of Jabari Harris and Jvontez Blackmon, each of whom scored twice in the game. The defending champs would seem to have cause for worry after escaping with a just a narrow win two weeks after being handed their worst loss in some time, a 33-0 shutout against the undefeated Wrocław Panthers.

Close as the game was, the Seahawks never trailed. They went ahead by a touchdown twice in the second quarter on scoring runs by Micah Brown and Angelo Pease, only to see Blackmon answer with a touchdown reception each time. Pease scored again in the third quarter to make it 21-12, before the teams combined for 34 points in the final frame.

Białystok fell behind by 17 points midway through the fourth quarter, but they were able to mount a nearly miraculous comeback nonetheless. Jabari Harris scored twice, including once on a 35-yard reception from Alexander Allen that came on a busted play, and the Lowlanders recovered onside kicks after each of those scores. That gave them the ball with a chance to tie or win in the final minute, and it looked like the Lowlanders would go ahead on an Allen reception in the end zone, but the officials ruled him out of bounds on the play and the Seahawks hung on.

The Lowlanders could get another shot at the Seahawks if they can secure a playoff spot, an achievement that could hinge on the result of their next game, at Husaria Szczecin on May 16. Białystok and Szczecin are currently tied for the fourth and final Topliga playoff berth. The second-place Seahawks will be back on the field on May 17, when they host the third-place Warsaw Eagles.

Lowlanders (3-3): at Husaria Szczecin (3-3), Saturday, May 16, 12:30 PM
Seahawks (5-1): vs. Warsaw Eagles (4-2), Sunday, May 17, 3:00 PM
