Six teams took the field in Week 5 of the PLFA II season, with two of the three games consisting of defensive struggles and the other ending in a big blowout. The BEagles were the lone road team to win, toppling the Lakers 12-0 in Olsztyn, while the Archers opened their 2014 campaign with a 54-0 win over the Griffons. In the weekend's other game, the Werewolves shot down the Green Ducks 22-7. Here is a quick recap of each of the three games played over the weekend.

Warsaw BEagles 12, Olsztyn Lakers 0 (in Olsztyn)

Saturday's game between the BEagles and Lakers in Olsztyn had none of the fireworks of last year's 43-36 BEagles victory, but it was no less satisfying for a Warsaw team that had lost its opener four weeks prior. The Warsaw defense held Olsztyn mainly in their own end of the field and came away with three interceptions in the 12-0 win.

The BEagles got into the Olsztyn red zone twice in the first quarter, but both times they were held to field goal attempts that were blocked by the Lakers. Piotr Pamulak finally put Warsaw ahead with a 12-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter, and Patryk Gwizd added a 17-yard touchdown run in the third quarter for the BEagles.

The Lakers fell to 0-2 on the season with the loss. To make things worse, they will be on the road for three of their last four games of the season, beginning with a June 21 date with the 2-0 Warsaw Werewolves. The 1-1 BEagles, on the other hand, will play their next three games at home, beginning with a special Thursday game against the Warsaw Sharks B team on June 19.

Warsaw Werewolves 22, Radom Green Ducks 7 (in Warsaw)

The Werewolves continued their hot start to the 2014 season, winning 22-7 over the Radom Green Ducks on Saturday to give them as many wins in two games this year as they had in the previous two seasons combined. Warsaw moved into a tie with the Warszawa Crusaders atop Group C a third of the way into the season, while the Green Ducks fell to 1-1.

Franciszek Maj got Warsaw on the board first with a 10-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, but Radom countered early in the second with a long touchdown reception by Rafał Frąk. The Werewolves regained the lead on a 3-yard touchdown run by Jason Abney, taking a 14-7 advantage into the locker room.

The Green Ducks had an excellent opportunity to tie the game in the third quarter, but they were stopped four times at the goal line to leave Warsaw ahead. The Werewolves got another touchdown from Maj later in the quarter, and neither team would score again on the afternoon.

Radom will have a tough time returning to the winning side of .500 when they take on the Crusaders in their next game, in Radom on June 19. Warsaw will also be at home for their next game, which comes on June 21 against the Olsztyn Lakers. The Werewolves and the Lakers met in the season opener for both teams in Olsztyn, a game that Warsaw won 28-20.

Bydgoszcz Archers 54, Słupsk Griffons 0 (in Bydgoszcz)

The Archers became the last 11-man Polish team to open their season on Sunday, but they gave home fans a performance that was worth the wait in a 54-0 rout of Słupsk. Bydgoszcz got two touchdowns apiece from Arkadiusz Kwinta and Paweł Kubiak in the win over the Griffons, who fell into last place in Group A.

Kwinta opened the scoring with a 38-yard touchdown run, and he added a 24-yarder in the second quarter. Kubiak's first score made it 33-0 at halftime for Bydgoszcz, who got all of their offensive touchdowns on the ground. Dawid Gajewski and Mateusz Marciniak chipped in with touchdown runs, the defense got a safety and Karol Chodor ran a punt back for a score.

Bydgoszcz will now look to strengthen their playoff resume with back-to-back games against the Poznań Patrioci, who lost their season opener to the Sopot Seahawks. The teams will first meet in Poznań on June 19. The Griffons will be on the road that same weekend, taking on the Saints in Częstochowa on June 21.
