Seahawks pound Tigers 61-12

On a sweltering early May afternoon in Krakow, the Gdynia Seahawks jumped all over the Dom-Bud Krakow Tigers in the first half and coasted to a 61-12 victory to mark the halfway point of the Topliga season. The Seahawks, led by a spectacular performance from Josh Le Duc, continued their recent dominance to go into the break tied with the Warsaw Eagles and the Wrocław Devils for the top position in PLFA's showcase league.

Le Duc, whose solid performances this season have been somewhat overshadowed by those of his teammates, had a breakout game on Sunday, scoring five touchdowns. Four of those scores went for 60 yards or more, including two that came on kickoff returns. Le Duc caught three of the four touchdown passes thrown on the afternoon by teammate Kyle McMahon.

The loss for the Tigers was their third straight, dropping them into another three-way tie, this one at the bottom of the division. Krakow sit level with Kozły Poznań and the AZS Silesia Rebels at 1-4, a record that currently would be good enough to get one of those three teams into the semifinals of the six-team division.

The Seahawks went ahead 20-0 in the first quarter on a McMahon touchdown run, the first of two Sebastian Krzysztofek touchdowns and a 75-yard scoring reception by Le Duc. The Tigers got their first score in the second quarter to pull to within 27-6, but after they got the ball back again a Jeff George interception return for a touchdown basically erased any hopes of a comeback. Le Duc had the next three consecutive scores, including a 90-yard kickoff return that opened the second half.

The Seahawks go into the break with momentum, something they will need to keep going as their next meeting is with the Warsaw Eagles, who dealt them their only loss of the season. That game, a snow-filled 52-22 result that was close until the fourth quarter, took place in week two of the season. Gdynia has improved since then, and they will have to hope the same isn't true about the Eagles when they come to visit on May 13.

The Tigers, who remain winless in four attempts against the Seahawks, will also be in action next on May 13, in a game that will be every bit as important as the Eagles-Seahawks matchup mentioned above. Krakow will be on the road at Kozły Poznań that afternoon, with the winner likely to take the lead in that tight race for the final playoff spot.
