Bogart PLFA II Championship Game recap

Autor: Alex Zarganis Published: 22 Oct 2013 | Comments: 0

The Bogart PLFA II Championship Game provided a thrilling climax to the PLFA season, as the Warszawa Królewscy pulled the curtain down on 2013 with a 20-15 victory over the Wrocław Devils B team. The Królewscy got a length-of-the-field interception to take the lead in the third quarter and then held the Devils on goal-to-go on Wrocław's final possession to join Husaria Szczecin (PLFA I) as this year's undefeated champions.

Although he didn't score, Bartosz Żebrowski played well enough on both sides of the ball for Warszawa to garner MVP honors. Żebrowski, a running back on offense, anchored a defense that repeatedly came up big when it mattered against Wrocław's spread attack.

The title game featured two of the best quarterbacks in PLFA II, and all five touchdowns in the game came as a result of the passing game. Karol Żak put the Królewscy ahead in the first quarter with his first of two touchdown passes, a 56-yard bomb to Mateusz Poneta. Żak, however, would go on to throw four interceptions in the game, including two to 17-year old cornerback Mariusz Górecki.

Krzysztof Wydrowski, who won Topliga titles in 2007 (as a member of the Wrocław Crew) and in 2010 (as a member of the Devils), also threw two touchdown passes. The first came in the second quarter, when Tomasz Soska caught a 3-yard scoring pass. Adam Góralski managed to convert a bad snap on the PAT attempt into two points, and the Devils led 8-7 at halftime.

The Królewscy, who won all six of their regular season games by at least 19 points before finding tougher opposition in the postseason, retook the lead in the third quarter on a 7-yard Mateusz Bednarczuk touchdown reception. The Devils struck back quickly, however, going back in front on a short touchdown catch by Góralski.

Wrocław then looked to have taken the lead late in the third quarter in what turned out to be the game's deciding sequence, but Ernest Rogowicz's apparent 40-yard touchdown run was overturned by an offensive penalty on the play. The Devils then drove down into the red zone, where Wydrowski was picked off by Błażej Patynowski, who returned the football 93 yards for the game-winning touchdown.

Wrocław, playing the last game under the Devils banner due to their impending merger with the Wrocław Giants, did not go down without a fight. They had one last chance to win it in the final minute, but their final drive stalled in the red zone. It was a fitting end for a Królewscy defense that had stamped its mark on PLFA II all season long, holding opponents to single-digit scores in 7 of Warszawa's 9 total games. They say that defense wins championships, and now the Królewscy have proven them correct.
